A microfiber towel is a towel made from microfiber fabric produced entirely from polyester. Because of the way the fabric is built, the surface absorbs a high amount of water and also dries quickly. A cotton towel, by contrast, is made from natural cotton yarn, usually woven with terry loops.
The difference between them is less about which one is better and more about where you will use it and whether it will be printed.
Absorbency: both fabrics take up water well
A common misconception is that microfiber absorbs far more water than cotton. In practice a good microfiber towel absorbs water as well as cotton does. The real difference appears afterwards: a microfiber towel holds the same amount of water yet dries much faster and takes up far less space.
Drying speed and weight
A microfiber towel dries quickly because it does not lock the water deep inside the yarn. At the same size it is around 40% lighter than a cotton towel and folds into a much smaller volume. That is why it is preferred for the gym bag, for travel and for the beach.
Why microfiber leads on printed work
The clearest advantage of microfiber shows up in printing. Sublimation printing works on polyester surfaces, and the dye enters the fibre instead of sitting on top of it. The result is a print that can cover the whole surface with photographic colour and detail. Gradients, shadows, fine type and photographs all reproduce cleanly; the print cannot be felt by hand and does not crack in the wash.
For promotional towels, microfiber is preferred because production is fast and small quantities are possible. It is an ideal solution for sports, festivals, hotels and other promotional events.
Why do towels smell?
A towel smells because moisture stays in the fabric for a long time, not because of the fabric type itself. Bacteria and mould develop in a towel that stays wet, and the odour comes from there. A microfiber towel dries quickly, so it meets that condition less often; even folded away damp in a bag it takes longer to develop odour than cotton.
To rescue a towel that already smells, wash it in hot water without fabric softener. Softener coats the surface and reduces absorbency. Take the towel out of the machine and open it to dry straight away.

Can a photograph be printed on a microfiber towel?
Yes. Sublimation printing can place a photographic image across the entire surface of the towel. Because the print enters the fabric it cannot be felt by hand and does not crack in the wash.
Is a microfiber towel harsh on the skin?
No. Quality microfiber towels with a suede or velour face are gentle on the skin. Fabrics certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1 can also be used in baby products.
How many washes does a microfiber towel last?
Quality microfiber keeps its colour after repeated washing and does not go linty. Avoiding fabric softener and high drying temperatures extends its life.
